My first dive into the world of UX Design. This project was part of the General Assembly User Experience Design Bootcamp. Together in teams of two we discussed ideas and problems we discovered in our day to day life and then used UX methods to create a User Persona and started paper prototyping.

At the start of this workshop I learned the definition of UX and what the field of UX encompasses and why it is so important. We got introduced to roles and responsibilities in the UX field and learned more about the design process.

The project itself started with conducting User Research and why it is so important to understand our users and in addition to that internal and external factors.

If I’d asked people what they wanted, they’d have said faster horses.

Conducting User interviews following the structure of the five W’s and also How, we were able create a user persona and define the problem statement. By creating the persona, we also wrote down three possible User Stories.

My team partner lived in South London and wanted a way to report noisy / problem neighbours, dealing drugs etc.

Problem statement

Reporting to the Safe Neighbourhood program about a noisy / problem neighbour takes a long time and involves logging in and filling out information by repeating basic information again and again.

The next step in this project was to look into the Design and Prototype phase.
We designed a flow chart, to understand how the user would go from point A to point B. As one of the user needs we learned earlier, that it is important to report a problem about a neighbour quickly without spending too much time in repeatedly entering the same information.

User Flow

User flows come in different shapes and sizes, we opted for a traditional Flow Chart.

In the last phase of this project we learned about sketching and working on a low-fidelity prototype. We tried to keep the screens simple and focus only on the important elements needed at this stage. The application needed to be aware of the person logging in, reports and neighbours and getting status updates about open reports.

Paper prototypes

Paper prototypes

After creating a first set of screens for the application, we tested the prototype and revised it to increase usability.
We learned about the prototyping application Marvelapp and were able to create an interactive prototype next. We used that for further User testing and made changes if necessary.

Conclusion

Within two days we defined a real life problem and worked on a possible solution so that people who need to report a noisy / problem neighbour can do this much quicker and without repeatedly reentering the same information.
